Our History

Peerless is a third-generation family-owned business. It all began at the height of the Great Depression. Prohibition was being replaced and the sale of beer became legal. In 1933, Charles Salzman was selling Near Beer and Seltzer, while Jake Beim was bottling Crescent Soda. These two young immigrants realized there was an opportunity to sell beer and began doing exactly that. Among their leading beers were Schlitz “The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous” and Feigenspan P.O.N. (“Pride of Newark”). Some of the other outstanding products they sold included Wooden Shoe (from where else but Holland), Stanton, Black Horse, Fox Head and Edelbrew. Forward to 30 years later: their sons Rich Salzman and Norm Beim would merge their two companies to create Peerless Beverage Company — the largest and most preferred wholesaler in Northern New Jersey. As Peerless heads into its 83rd year, the third-generation of Scott Beim and Chuck Salzman are leading the way. Today Peerless Beverage Company is housed in a 250,000-square-feet state-of-the-art distribution center, selling 8.5 million (8 million cases of beer and half-million cases of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks) cases annually and is a 50-fleet operation, ranking it one of the largest beer distribution centers in the state. Along with its cutting-edge technology, insight and innovation, Peerless provides the best quality products.
